For instance, many people audition yet they usually highlight (and visit the homes of):
Black women who are single parents
Skinny black girls who look like hood rats
Fat (often very dark) black women with no good looks whatsoever
Pretty white girls of every hair color (not just blonde)
Dorky white girls who personify weirdness
Awkward Asians
The first season had the most absolutely gorgeous slim talented classy black girls
Well-adjusted white girls
And everything NORMAL in between.
What happened? Why the Lakishas and the Fantasias? What are they trying to do or say?
american idol’s only aim is to get ratings… by doing whatever it takes. an example being the flawed auditions, where at least 50% percent of all the people who audition are turned away because they aren’t insane, really bad, etc.
Jesus.
Keep it in mind that the network will not have those stereotypical images to portray if those people do not go to the auditions.
The freaks and weirdos that show up, show up on their own free will… so you can’t really blame the networks for taking cheap shots by airing them on T.V
“Fat (often very dark) black women with no good looks whatsoever”
U is a racist. I happen to be married to a fat, very dark, black woman with no good looks and she ain’t too happy with you!

I see no problem with the ‘Fantasias and the LaKishas’ (being a Fantasia fan). As long as they can sing, they’re alright in my book.

They still have some attractive black females on the show. You have to remember things changed since some viewers were angry over the fact they preferred a certain look. These pretty blacks girls you’d mention was among the other top eight contestants with the cookie cutter looks– Simon especially wanted these types in the competition and practically shunned those who were a bit overweight or didn’t fit the image even if some had the talent. But you saw they expanded their choices in season 2 with heavyweight Ruben and dorky Clay.
I don’t think they tried to make the audition a racial stereotype as you say. These folks willingly signed up to be the next Idol and out of millions you are going to expect anything from the typical pretty girls (and boys) to the downright weirdos.
They will highlight every sob story, anyone who talks about about being a single mom, being raised on a farm, people who objectify to looking hot and trendy and everything else. I guess you can say they wanted everyone from every walk of life that the average person can identify with (whatever that may be)
These types of stories will get people to talk and overall it’s about the ratings at the end.
Because people that fit in to those stereotypes are easily identifiable, and are easy for the average idiot viewer to characterize. I’ve noticed that just about all aspects of Hollywood have the same problem. Kinda sucks.
Everything has to be a racial stereotype doesn’t it…?
